This was a big issue for Maria, and I wanted to treat it respectfully. I also felt strongly that we belonged together. I believe in marriage; I believe in commitment. If something happened to me, I wanted Maria to have the farm, to have some resources so she could do what she wished with her life. This was love to me, and I felt it strongly.

So it was in the air—I kept it there—but without rancor. I didn’t argue with her, try to talk her into it, or get annoyed. I just kept asking.

I am not a subtle person. I am not good at waiting. I had lived alone long enough, been loveless long enough, been frightened long enough.

I was done with that.
